Gorrilla Tennis

I am a huge fan of making up my own games. My friends all know this about me as they've experienced those times when I'll start proposing new rules to transform a common sport into something completely new.

One of my favorites is Gorilla Tennis!

Gorilla Tennis is a combination of racquetball and tennis played on a tennis court. The rules are simple:
  • You must return the ball within 2 bounces.
  • Like racquetball, the ball can hit any wall as many times as possible.
  • You use ping pong scoring first to 21 points, switching serves every 5.
  • And when you play doubles, you can set the ball to your teammate to spike. The ball just cannot hit the ground again after your set.
It is a great game. Give it a try next time your at a court, especially playing with doubles. It is so much fun, especially once you master the strategy behinds a doubles Gorilla Tennis match. It is amazing how competitive people can get playing a game with made up rules.

Now, I created this game about a year ago, playing it several times with friends. And a few months ago my friend traveled to France and he found that they play this there already. No joke! The rules were slightly changed and the court was smaller. But it was definitely Gorilla Tennis, racquetball rules played on a tennis court. I will try to get the pictures from him and post them.

It just goes to show you that you could actually create the next big pro sport just by messing around. That's how basketball was invented.
